What Are Core Words?

Today, we’re diving into the world of core words and why using core word of the week in your classroom is an absolute game-changer.
Now, I know you’re already familiar with core words, but let’s quickly recap for anyone who might be new to this concept. Core words are like the building blocks of language. A List of 200 core words makes up about 80% of the words we use daily! By focusing on them, we can help our students develop essential communication skills.
Why Use Core Word of the Week?
In my classroom, I team up with my amazing SLP to plan our Core Word of the week. Each week we introduce a new core word to focus on. I take that core word and infuse it throughout the day as much as possible. I use the core words on AAC devices, I adapt read alouds to include the core word, I collaborate with classroom staff and encourage use throughout the week, and we foster communication at home by sending home a parent letters explaining the core word of the week and how we can use it out in the community.
So, why is it important to incorporate a core word of the week into your teaching routine? Well, my friend, let me tell you.
Consistency and Structure
By dedicating a specific word for the week, you create a predictable learning environment for your students. They know what to expect, and this familiarity allows them to engage more effectively. I display our Core Word of the Week on our board, and post it outside our classroom door so everyone is aware what core word we are focusing on that week.
Fosters Vocabulary Development
I give students multiple opportunities to practice using core words throughout the day. I use “more” during meal times, “all done” at the end of an activity, “go” during transitions, “here” to ask are you here today?, and “turn” to ask students to turn the page during a read aloud.
One of the best ways to give students repeated exposure to the core word of the week is through a read aloud. I choose a book that showcases our core word, and adapt the book to give our students multiple opportunities to read the core word.
Over time, this repeated modeling helps solidify their understanding and promotes generalization, allowing them to apply the word in everyday conversations.
Versatility
Core words are applicable across different subjects and activities, making them incredibly useful in your classroom. Put, On, Off, Look, Touch, are just some of the core words I use during math, science, or engaging in arts and crafts.
Incorporate games and other fun activities into your teaching to make learning core words more engaging and enjoyable. Some fun game ideas for teaching Core Words:
- Red light Green light: Teach core words STOP and GO with a game of red light green light! Change up the rules a bit and tell students to move when you say GO and stop moving when you say STOP. Hold up the core word symbols as you say the words so students can associate the word and picture.
- Scavenger Hunt: Teach core words WHERE, THERE, HERE, and LOOK with a fun scavenger hunt. Get creative and hide items around the school for students to find. As you help students search, emphasize the core words by putting core word symbols on a voice output device, and have the students participate by saying, “Where is it?”, “There it is!”, “It’s over Here!”, “Look at what I found!”
- Grocery Store: Teach core words IN and OUT by taking the students to the grocery store! You can turn your classroom into a grocery store by setting items on tables and labeling them at different prices. Students can move around the school with grocery baskets, put things IN the basket, and take them OUT at the cash register.
