If you’ve ever had a student who struggles with transitions or emotional regulation (and let’s face it, we all have!), then you know how important it is to have tools in place that help them calm down and refocus. In my classroom, this is where calm down visual supports have been a total game-changer.

When students are overwhelmed, upset, or just need help transitioning between activities, having visual supports to guide them through calming strategies is so empowering. It gives them the independence to manage their emotions while giving us, as teachers, the tools we need to support them in a positive and structured way.

Why Visual Supports for Calming?

Let’s talk about why visual supports are so powerful, especially in a special education classroom. Many of our students are visual learners, and having something they can look at and reference during moments of stress is incredibly helpful. When emotions are running high, it’s harder for them to process verbal directions. Visual supports act as that extra layer of communication—giving students a clear, simple reminder of what they can do to calm themselves down.

In my classroom, I’ve found that a calm down corner or space is crucial for creating an environment where students feel safe and supported. By using visual supports that outline specific strategies, I’m giving my students the chance to take control of their own emotions and find what works best for them.

How Calm Down Visual Supports Work

Whether your student needs a quick sensory break or some quiet time to read a book, these visual supports are designed to give them options.

Some of the strategies included are:

  • Mat time
  • Deep breaths
  • Sensory play
  • Read a book
  • Yoga
  • Squeeze putty
  • Listen to music
  • Wall pushes
  • Jumping jacks
  • Fidget toys

And the list goes on! I can’t tell you how many times these visual supports have saved the day when a student was on the verge of a meltdown.

Setting Up a Calm Down Corner in Your Classroom

Like I said above, one of the best ways to implement these supports is by creating a calm down corner or calm down space in your classroom. This can be as simple or as elaborate as you want, depending on your students’ needs. I like to have a designated space with cozy seating (beanbags or a soft mat), sensory tools, and of course, these calm-down visual supports displayed.

When a student starts to feel overwhelmed, I prompt them to go to the calm down corner and select a strategy from the visual choices. They can look at the visuals, decide what they need and start calming themselves down.

Whether it’s deep breathing, taking a break, or squeezing a stress ball, having that visual reminder helps them focus on a positive behavior rather than getting more upset.

Encouraging Independence

What I love most about these calm down visuals is how they promote independence. Emotional regulation is such an important life skill, and by using these visuals, we’re giving our students the tools to self-regulate. It’s not just about calming down in the moment—it’s about teaching them tools and strategies that they can carry with them outside of the classroom.

For our non-verbal or minimally verbal students, this can be especially empowering. When they have the visual supports in front of them, they don’t need to rely on words to communicate how they’re feeling or what they need. It’s all laid out for them in a way that’s accessible and easy to understand.

Adapting the Visuals for Your Classroom

The beauty of these visual supports is that they’re super flexible. You can adapt them to fit your classroom’s unique needs. For some of my students, I’ve had to simplify the options or focus on just a few strategies that I know work best for them. For others, I let them explore all 32 options and find what they connect with most.

And don’t worry about students getting bored or tired of the same strategies—there’s enough variety here to keep things fresh. Whether it’s sensory play, a quiet moment with a book, or a quick yoga stretch, you’ll have plenty of options to cycle through as needed!
